Cylosporine Ophthalmic Oinment 2mg/g for cat
Cyclosporine Ophthalmic Ointment 2mg/g is a topical immunomodulatory eye medication designed specifically for cats suffering from inadequate tear production and immune-mediated eye inflammation.
Dry eye in cats can lead to:
- Persistent redness
- Thick mucus discharge
- Squinting or blinking
- Corneal dryness
- Discomfort and irritation
If untreated, chronic dryness may cause corneal damage and vision impairment. This ointment helps restore natural tear production while calming inflammation inside the eye.
What is Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (KCS)?
KCS, commonly known as dry eye, occurs when tear production is insufficient to properly lubricate the eye surface.
Common Causes in Cats:
- Immune-mediated destruction of tear glands
- Feline herpesvirus infection
- Medication-induced tear suppression
- Neurological causes
- Chronic inflammation
Typical Symptoms:
- Thick yellow or mucus discharge
- Cloudy cornea
- Frequent blinking or squinting
- Light sensitivity
- Red or inflamed conjunctiva
How Cyclosporine Ophthalmic Ointment Works
Cyclosporine is a calcineurin inhibitor that:
Stimulates Tear Production
By suppressing immune-mediated damage to tear glands, allowing them to resume normal function.
Reduces Inflammation
Controls T-cell activity responsible for chronic conjunctival inflammation.
Protects Corneal Surface
Maintains lubrication, preventing corneal dryness and ulcer formation. Unlike systemic cyclosporine, this ophthalmic form works locally in the eye with minimal systemic absorption.
Indications
Cyclosporine Ophthalmic Ointment 2mg/g is commonly prescribed for:
- Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (Dry Eye)
- Immune-mediated conjunctivitis
- Chronic inflammatory eye conditions
- Supportive therapy in herpes-related ocular disease (under vet supervision)
